Toll Takers
5/6/2010

You have not fulfilled every duty, unless you have fulfilled that of being pleasant. - Charles Buxton
A while ago I drove from New York to Maine and was impressed by the difference in the attitude and character of the toll takers. For some, their work was taking a toll on them.
In New York the music coming out of the booth was loud and fast, and it was a pleasant to leave the sound. The toll taker didn't relate to me or make eye contact. They handed me the change, and away I drove.
I usually like to interact and say things like, "How can I help you?" One of the times I asked that question, the toll taker responded by asking me to get out of my car, take over for her, and let her drive off. We had a good laugh. Since I was reimbursed with a laugh, this toll stop didn't cost me anything. In Maine the music was soft, slow, and soothing. I didn't mind waiting for my change. I noticed the toll taker was more interested in talking to me and was withholding my change so he and I could go on speaking. He enjoyed my company, and I his. Again there was a refund on the toll.
Solution of the Day: Don't let Life take its toll; live a life that reimburses you.
