Why Sleep
4/29/2010

The dreams of night prepare you for the day that follows. - Lucy, Peanuts
Why do we sleep? Do Lucy and Shakespeare, who wrote, "To sleep, perchance to dream," know something?
Most living things do not sleep the way we do. Horses sleep on their feet for only a few hours because they are aware that sleeping is a dangerous practice. Predators sleep longer because they have less to fear. Think back to a time when we slept in open areas easy for predators to get to. If you wanted to survive, you stayed awake or had someone stand guard. So why has evolution given us this need? I feel it is not simply because our bodies need a rest. Resting can be done without sleeping.
I believe we sleep to allow our conscious and unconscious minds to communicate and organize the wisdom that we are to be aware of. This wisdom, from our Creator, is communicated to us in dreams and visions. That is the universal language that creation speaks to us all. Different languages separate us, but symbols unite us.
When Charlie Brown asks Lucy what the above quote means, Lucy replies, "It's at night, Charlie Brown, that your brain is really working. Your brain is trying to sort everything out for you. It's trying to make you see yourself as you really are."
